GTM Ultimate Stack

Check GA4 configuration in every GTM container

Find containers with two GA4 configuration tags, Measurement IDs typed into tags, leftover Universal Analytics tags and event parameters that won't match your GA4 reports.

Four GA4 configuration standards

  • Exactly one GA4 configuration tag (error): one GA4 configuration or Google tag per container. Two can double-count page views; none means GA4 isn't configured from this container.
  • No hardcoded Measurement IDs (error): the Measurement ID or tag ID field holds a {{variable}}, not the literal ID.
  • No Universal Analytics tags (warning): Universal Analytics no longer processes data, so its tags only add weight.
  • GA4 event parameter keys are snake_case (info, off by default): every event parameter name in a GA4 event tag is lower-case words joined by underscores.
Two config tags, a literal ID, a leftover UA tag and two parameter keys to rename.

A table of five containers showing results for each GA4 configuration standard.

Why one variable beats a typed ID

A Measurement ID typed into each tag works, until the property changes and one tag is missed. With the ID in a Constant variable, every tag reads it from one place. The standard passes any field that references a variable, whatever the variable is.

A literal ID fails; a variable passes.

Two panels: a tag with a literal Measurement ID fails the standard; one that references a Constant variable passes.

Parameter names that match your reports

GA4 treats form_id and formId as different parameters. If one brand sends one and the next brand the other, a custom dimension registered for one misses the other. Switch on the snake_case standard to find every event tag that breaks the pattern, then rename the parameters in GTM. To check the GA4 side, see Register a custom dimension on every property.

Fix and re-check

Remove a leftover Universal Analytics tag in Inventory & Cleanup: stage the delete, review, apply and publish. Swap a literal ID for a variable, or remove a second configuration tag, in GTM. Then run the audit again.

Questions about GA4 configuration standards

?

Does a container with a GA4 configuration tag and a Google tag fail?

Yes. The standard counts both types, so two of them in one container is two.

?

What if a Measurement ID field isn't used?

A tag with none of the checked fields has nothing to judge, and passes.

?

Why is the snake_case standard off?

Many containers use other conventions on purpose. Switch it on if snake_case is your rule.
