Align enhanced measurement and data redaction on every web stream

Compare enhanced measurement events and email and query parameter redaction stream by stream across every property, then switch them on or off in one reviewed batch.

Settings that live on the stream

Enhanced measurement and data redaction belong to a web data stream, not to the property. The Data streams category shows one row per web stream: a property with a main site and a shop on separate streams has two.

App streams don't carry these settings. A property with no web stream shows No web data stream and takes no part in the comparison.

One row per web stream. The shop stream is the odd one out.

Enhanced measurement, toggle by toggle

The Enhanced measurement switch decides whether the stream's enhanced measurement settings are used at all. Beneath it, each event has its own toggle: page changes based on browser history events, scrolls, outbound clicks, site search, video engagement, file downloads and form interactions.

Form interactions is off by default in GA4, so it is the toggle most often different between brands. Site search also reads the site search query parameters: a comma-separated list of up to 1,024 characters. Sites with different search URLs may need different values, so leave that one out of a shared baseline unless your sites match.

A master switch and seven events, each on or off per stream.

A checklist of the enhanced measurement master switch and its seven event toggles, with form interactions marked off by default.

Check for double counting first

If a site's GTM container already sends its own form, scroll or video events, turning on the matching enhanced measurement event can count the same action twice. Before you switch a toggle on across brands, check what GTM already sends: Find GTM and GA4 breaks across brands and Audit events across properties show it.

Redact personal data before it's collected

Two redaction settings keep personal data out of GA4:

  • Redact email addresses: event parameter and user property values that look like an email address are redacted.
  • Redact query parameters: the listed query parameter keys and their values are removed from collected URLs. Keys aren't case-sensitive, can't contain commas, and at least one is needed while it is on. Up to 100 keys.
With redaction on, the email and the token never reach reports.

Two panels: URLs collected without redaction showing an email address and a token, and the same URLs with redaction on.

Align them in one batch

Load the Data streams category, compare against a baseline or the most common value, and stage the changes. Match the baseline and Match this property stage a change for every web stream of each target property. Preview, then apply: Change settings in one reviewed batch covers each step.

Redaction and enhanced measurement apply to data collected after the change. Reports already holding an email address keep it.

Questions about stream settings

?

Why does my property show No web data stream?

It has only app streams, or no streams. Enhanced measurement and redaction are web stream settings, so there is nothing to read.

?

Does redaction clean data already collected?

No. It applies to data collected after the change.

?

Can different streams in one property have different settings?

Yes. Each web stream has its own row, its own comparison and its own staged change.
