GTM Ultimate Stack
Trace a dataLayer event to every tag it fires
Search a dataLayer event name to see every trigger listening for it, every tag those triggers fire and every variable those tags read, before a developer renames or removes it.
Why trace an event
A dataLayer event is the handshake between a website and GTM. When a developer renames purchase to order_complete, or stops pushing it on one template, every trigger listening for the old name goes quiet, and so does every tag those triggers fire. Nothing errors. The tags just stop.
Search the event
Search the event name. dataLayer events are marked with their own kind in the results. Choose it and the downstream side lists every Custom Event trigger listening for it.
Follow it to the tags
Click each trigger to see the tags it fires, then each tag to see the variables it reads. For a purchase event that's usually a GA4 event tag, an ads conversion tag and a Floodlight tag, reading the same value and transaction ID variables.
A map from the purchase dataLayer event to two Custom Event triggers, three tags and two dataLayer variables.
Plan the change with the developer
With the chain in front of you, the change is a list: update these triggers to the new name, check these variables still find their values, and ship the site change and the GTM publish together. Afterwards, load the account again and search the new name: it should drive the same tags.
A four-step flow for an event rename: search the old name, read what it drives, update the triggers, map again.
Check the GA4 side too
The map shows what GTM does with the event. To check GA4 still receives it, and that it's still marked as a key event where it should be, use Find tracking breaks between GTM and GA4.
Questions about tracing events
Why isn't my event in the search?
No Custom Event trigger listens for it by a fixed name. Click, page view and timer triggers don't use event names.
A trigger matches several events with a pattern. Is it shown?
Yes, with the pattern as its event label.
Does the map know which pages push the event?
No. It reads GTM, not your website.
