GTM Ultimate Stack
Export a GTM tag's full lineage for review
Build an export selection, preview each item's full lineage, and send it as an Excel or HTML file to whoever signs off the change.
Why export a lineage
Some changes need sign-off: removing a vendor, rebuilding a conversion, handing a container to a new agency. A lineage puts the whole picture in one file the reviewer can read without GTM access: the item, what fires it, what it reads, and what those depend on.
Build the export selection
As you explore, add items to the export selection with the plus button next to any item. Each one you add is marked with a star and becomes the starting point of its own lineage. Add several to cover a whole change, such as every tag for one vendor. Clear empties the selection, and loading the account again clears it too.
What a lineage includes
From each starred item, the lineage follows every fires, blocks and listens for link as far as the chain goes: event to trigger to tag. It then adds the variables those items read, one step out.
It doesn't follow a shared variable out to its other users. A Measurement ID read by forty tags is in the lineage, but the other thirty-nine tags aren't, so the export stays about the change you're reviewing. Star another tag to widen it on purpose.
A lineage map from a dataLayer event through a trigger to a starred tag and its two variables, with the shared variable's twelve other tags marked as not followed.
Preview, then export
Press Preview to see each lineage before you export it. Then export it as .xlsx for a spreadsheet the reviewer can filter, or .html for a page anyone can open, or email it straight to the reviewer. Export and email are Premium.
An export form with two starred tags and their lineage sizes, a choice of xlsx or html, and an email address.
After the review
When the change is approved, stage it in Inventory & Cleanup and keep the export with your change record. Workspaces, publishing and recovery covers what to keep.
Questions about lineage exports
Do I need Premium?
To export or email a lineage, yes. Building and previewing it is free.
Why aren't all the tags that use our Measurement ID in the export?
Shared variables are followed one step. Star more tags, or search the variable to see every user.
Does the export include unpublished edits?
It's built from the Default Workspace, so edits there are included.
