GA4 Ultimate Stack

Create GA4 event rules and mark key events without opening every property

Find the event in one table, then create or edit an event create rule on the right data stream, or toggle key-event status per property, with a dry run before every write.

Two different kinds of change

Events Manager makes two kinds of GA4 change, and they live in different places:

  • An event create rule builds a new event from an existing one. It lives on one web data stream, so each write targets one property's stream.
  • Key-event status marks an event as a conversion. It is set per property, one toggle at a time.

Both are live GA4 writes. Both start from the same table you use to audit events across properties.

Rules live on a data stream; key events are set per property.

Two panels: event create rules on one web data stream, and key events toggled per property.

Create a new event rule

  1. Choose Create and pick the target property and its data stream.
  2. Name the new event, for example contact_form_submit.
  3. Set the matching conditions, for example event_name equals form_submit and form_id equals contact.
  4. Run the dry run.

The editor names exactly what it will touch: one property's data stream. A roll-up property receives the new event automatically from its source stream, so you don't write it twice.

Target, new event name and matching conditions. The editor warns that the write is live and can't be undone.

Edit an existing rule's conditions

Select a rule-built event's row and edit its conditions. Typical reasons: a thank-you page URL changed, or a form ID was renamed. Editing changes which future events the rule builds; it doesn't rewrite events already in reports.

One condition edited, one kept. The change applies to future events only.

Dry run, then confirm

Every rule write starts with a dry run that writes nothing and shows the exact rule that would be created or changed, on which stream. Read it, then confirm. Once confirmed, the rule is live immediately. GA4 has no workspace to review it in later and no undo, so the dry run is your review.

The preview names the stream and the rule. Confirming makes it live.

Mark a key event on each property

In the event table, the Key column shows each event's key-event status per property. Click a row's Key cell to toggle it on that property. If generate_lead is a key event on four brands and not on a fifth, you can set the fifth from the same table, without switching property in GA4.

Each toggle is its own change on that property, and it affects key-event reporting from then on.

Write once on the source stream

If your brands report into a roll-up property, create rules on the source stream, not on the roll-up. The roll-up inherits what its streams produce, so writing it in both places can count the same event twice.

Write the rule once on the source stream. The roll-up receives it.
